hermit crab humidity

Question
Hi, I have read about the importance of maintaining humidity in the crabs habitat.  I have even read that a mesh cover should/ could be lined w/ saran wrap or covered in plastic to keep humidity in the tank.  How do the crabs get oxygen if you completely cover the tank and block airflow?  Thanks, Gabrielle (ps - I am a new owner and have put coconut fibers down and added water to a coconut fiber brick.  How do I know if I have too much water in the coconut fibers- how do I avoid getting mites - I read that could be a problem w/ coconut fibers.  Thanks!

Answer
Plastic wrap should be used for emergencies only(if your lid cracks) it is best to get a glass top or have some acrylic cut to fit your tank. As for air flow you can raise the lid a few inches or you can drill some holes in an acrylic top.

You should squeeze out the coco fiber with your hands and get rid of as much water as possible.

Mites may come with new crabs from the store. You need to give a salt water bath when you first get crabs to see if anything comes out of their shell. They will be very tiny but you can see them floating at the top of the water.
