Question
My name is Gabbie. I am a 7th grade student from Avalon school Saint Paul Minnesota. I would like to interview you about Hermit crabs for my Project.

The questions I have are:
1.What other allergies do they have?
2.Why are painted shells bad?
3.How long do they live?
4.How many legs do they have?
5.Why are they nocturnal?
6.How do they eat?
7.When they are molting how many legs can they lose?
8.How do they go to the bathroom and what are some of there daily activities?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Answer
Gabbie, I will give you the brief answers to your questions and I encourage you to go to a site like www.crabstreetjournal.com and read their articles. They've got lots of in depth information and research is good for the soul ;)

1. Other allergies? I'm not aware of any allergies for crabs.

2. Because the paint flakes off and crabs may eat it. Also because the practice of getting a crab into a painted shell is very cruel.

3. In captivity, 2-10 years on average, in the wild, as long as 50.

4. 10

5. Hard to say why, probably because it is safer to scavenge the sand at night.

6. They have a "feeder claw", the littler one, that tears off and hands food to the mouth. Their mouths have tiny little appendages that grab the food from the feeder claw.

7. When a crab molts he sheds his whole exoskeleton and all of his legs are part of that. When a crab gets very stressed he may drop his leg (it comes off) and this is a sign that something is wrong with your crab.

8. They go to the bathroom with regular poo and they pee out their antennae.

Activities they enjoy are digging, climbing, eating and sleeping.
