Hi there,
 This may seem silly to most, but I am new to keeping Hermit Crabs. I was given 2 in painted shells, it took a few days but they changed shells, and I got the painted shells out. Ruddie that was in a red shell with Rudolph on it changed and I watched so I knew what shell he went into, Blue Boy in a blue shell changed over night and I didnt see it change. If I had'nt seen Ruddie change, I would not know which is which in the new shells. How do ppl know what crab is who, by their names? I havent been able to see certain body charistics, how different they may be etc etc. Is that how ppl know, by certain looks to each one? I have more shells for them, if they change when I am not watching, I wont know which is which.

You're right. Telling your hermit crabs apart can be a real challenge. I've met crabbers that can tell just by looking who is who and I'm here to tell you, I'm not one of those crabbers. So it just depends on how well you remember detail but there is no shame in not knowing which crab is which. It doesn't mean you love them any less. imagine if you had 5 white bunnies. It'd be hard to tell them apart too!
