Possible Ovarian Cyst

Question
I have a 4 yr old female GP that has never been bred.  She recently started with hair-loss on her rump and what looks like a "v-pattern" up her back.  I took her to my local vet (he does exotic pets) and was told that clinically it looked like ovarian cysts after they ruled out mites, fungus, etc.  She is scheduled for spaying surgery next week.  I am getting conflicting info about this.  Peter Gurney's website says most pigs live fine with ovarian cysts but some websites say get them out or the GP will die!  Why would the GP die from cysts?  Human woman generally don't.  The vet never said it would kill her but will wack out her hormones and she will have behavior changes, dull hair and dry skin problems which I don't want for her.  But I am scared of the surgery!  What would you recommend if it was your darling GP?

Answer
Hi Lorraine

I have read a lot of peter gurney's literature. He shares his house with about 70 piggies and he writes about them with a real passion.

I am not in a position to advise you about ovarian cysts, but I always take Peter Gurney's advice, so I recommend that you do the same.

Good luck
