lack of sounds

Question
Hello, I just bought my 1st guinea pig 2 days ago.  So far, she seems really content & has bounced around and even taken eyes-closed naps.  But she hasnt made a peep!  Is this normal?  I thought she would have made some sounds already, especially since she seems so happy.  Thanks, Shannon

Answer
Hi Shannon,

She sounds like she is doing well so far. Congratulations on your new piggy.

She might be not making any noises because she is a naturally quiet guinea pig, or maybe she is a bit lonely. Even though she appears fine on the outside, she could be a bit lonely on the inside. Look into adopting a friend for her from a rescue or shelter and she will no doubt be much happier.

It will take a few weeks for her to associate certain sounds with food, which you will find is when they are the most vocal! Before long she will be wheeking when she hears you open the fridge door, or when you crinkle a bag.

Just give her time to settle in and get her a female (or neutered male) buddy and she should eventually find her voice.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
