Question
Dear Shawntiah,

I have 3 dwarf hamsters, the oldest female recently gave birth to a litter of six on monday morning, so I separated the other adults into a secluded cage and placed her cage into my closet where it's dark and warm. After birth, she carried them by her food hoard and made a nest. But as of monday night, she separated two of the six into the neighboring cage but still goes over now and then and nurses them. I was concerned so I took a book light and examaind all of the newborns from a safe distance, seeing no physical differences, i am quite certain that she is just trying to make sure everyone gets their share of milk? But if that isn't why, then i'm completly puzzled why theese ones are separated from their sisters and brothers?

Answer
Hello John,
Congrats on the babies and congrats on everything you have done so far. You have done everything right so far. The mother normally moves all her pups around and she is probably trying to make sure all the pups get milk. Also, a mother knows whether or not the babies are okay and she may have seperated them because she felt something was wrong with them. The best thing to do is to watch and actually do nothing. Not everything is known immediently why they do what they do but my best guess is when all of them get older you may understand why she did what she did. Since you physically don't see anything wrong with them, it may be because she is trying to make sure that all the babies are getting what they need. I hope I have answered your question. Good luck and keep me posted
