adopted ferret and not eating

Question
Hi,
A lady at my nieces work has been trying to get a home for her daughter's ferret.  The ferret was caged and not played with. I took her in because I recently lost my 2 ferrets and I missed them so much.  I got this one at 2 oclock today and she hasn't eaten.  It has been hectic here since she met the dogs and my daughter's ferret.  She has pooped and peed and is trying to search her new territory.  Is it normal for a ferret not to eat (the owner provided the food she normally eats)when they go to a new house?  She is not thin but she is a little chubby.  She looks healthy but I am going to take her for a checkup tomorrow anyway.

I just was wondering if this is common..

Thank you,
Sandy

Answer
Hi Sandy:

Congratulations and THANK YOU for rescuing this precious little ferret!  No doubt she is going to think you can walk on water as soon as she realizes she has a *real* home instead of a cage!  I'm so very very happy about that!

It is not at all unusual, with all that has been going on today.  Just the change of home alone upsets their delicate system. Hopefully tonight, now that everything has settled down you can try to give her some of her old familiar kibble and she will eat for you. If not, you could try putting some in a blender and making it into a powder, then mix with water to make it into a 'gravy' type food - warm in micro, stir with your finger and feed her from your finger for best results :-)

Don't be surprised in the next day or so if she has some 'loose & greenish' poops for you - that's just stress too.  Probabaly a good idea to keep as few new things in one day as possible to give her a chance to settle in a bit.

Bless your heart for rescuing this little girl!  I bet your little ones were very very special and I think you honor their lives by taking this little one into your home in their memory.

Sincerely,

Jacquie Rodgers
