Ferret chews

Question
Hi - in Australia we have very few ferret specific products available. While some of my 5 ferts are happy to chow down on chicken necks and wings to clean their teeth, I have 2 older ferts who just refuse. Their diet is fairly good - high quality kitten crunchies, ferret cruchies (we only have one brand available 'Total World) and fresh roo meat - which they all love.
I would like to find something 'chewy' for Baloo and a'Choo to keep the tartar at bay, but thus far have been unsuccessful. Wondering if you have any ideas on how to make something like n-bones, which are rumored to be fantastic for this (and which I can't get anyone to sell to Australia).

Thanks for you time

Justine

Answer
Hello Justine,

Ferrets are not big chewers (unlike dogs) and it can be difficult to find a product they are willing to gnaw on.  One of my guys likes the Greenies dental chew products (http://www.greenies.com/en_US/Products/DentalChew.aspx) but none of my others care for it.  I've had a difficult time with this as well since tarter and calculi are a constant battle and it is thought that bad teeth is linked to heart disease.

If you are concerned and cannot find a product to help, consult with your veterinarian.  A routine dental might be a good idea to clean up any plaque and prevent health problems.
