Sick? Ferret.

Question
I have a 2+ month old ferret who I'm concerned about. This is my first ferret so maybe I'm just paranoid. He plays, drinks, eats, and poops normally but every so often he will start hacking and and sometimes a tiny bit of puke will come out. It doesn't happen a lot, but when it does I get so scared. I also am not sure what I should do about choking, I've read so many different things about how to help them.

Answer
Dear Shawnee,

Very often ferrets will hack and/or sneeze.  It can be caused by dust, fabric softeners in the laundry, or cleaning products.

Since your little fuzzy is actually coughing up something, I'd call the vet to ask for their advice.  The problem could be as simple as a food allergy.  But, I strongly suggest a check up as it could head off a more serious problem.  I would not delay.  When these little guys get sick, they tend to go down hill rather quickly.

Meanwhile, a tip to reduce normal sneezing and hacking.  When washing all bedding and toys, use very little soap and No fabric softeners.  When cleaning the cage, a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water is fine.  (it's all I use).  The solution will greatly reduce those little ferret odors and it actually does kill some types of germs. Using harsh cleaners will cause more harm than good.

I hope I've been of some help, Shawnee.  I wish you and your little fuzzies well.  Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm Regards,
Janet
