submissive peeing inside the car

Question
I have a 20 month old terverun( i have had her since 4 months)who dislikes car travel (she flew to CA. from MI)but everyday we drive downtown to meet my walking group -we walk for an hour and get in the car to come home--on the way home she pees in the car when we go under a big overpass(it's like a short tunnel) she is overall timid -not great with other dogs but I am working on keeping her safe and not putting her in scary situations. The peeing eveyday is a somewhat new thing --she was riding in her crate inside the car but I lent the crate to a friend with a puppy and we were trying to go without in the car. She still has her house crate. I keep thinking she will out grow her dislike of car travel since she does it daily but she does not seem to be making progress and suggestions?? thanks

Answer
I think I'd let the friend with a puppy buy their own crate, and start riding her crated again. For some dogs the less they can see out, the more comfortable they are. For car rides, you might even look into a fabric crate if she's good in a crate. And put a sheet over it to block out more of the visual. I would also consider leaving her at home for when you have to do an hour drive for the time being, and gradually desensitizing her by going for very short rides to very fun places (like for ice cream or a burger patty)And as she's happy about that, you can increase the length of the trip. If she is nauseous, you might try ginger snaps, and might try a body wrap, which can be comforting

or even looking into a calming cap

(which, of course, you would have to desensitize her to BEFORE you used it in the car, and I'd do the same with the wrap, though it's not as worrisome for most dogs) and possibly talk to your vet about anti-anxiety drugs.
