Dog Rubbing on Couch

Question
I have a 4 year old Golden Retriever who has always acted more like a cat and has rubbed herself on my furniture.  I can not get her to stop and she has totally ruined my couch.  I need to get another one but I hate to do this before I get her to stop doing it to the one she has ruined.  Please help.  Thanks.

Answer
Start with a clean bill of health so you are certain there are no underlying causes contributing to your dog rubbing on the couch.

You could find a cover to toss over the couch so you have a way to keep the couch clean. That would work for a new couch too.

You can teach your dog not to rub on the couch, but after 4 years, this will take some time. Also, you will need to supervise the dog to make sure there are no returns to old behavior.

There are some products that encourage pets to stay away from the furniture, but I don't know how effective they would be in your situation.

Your dog is most likely rubbing on the couch because it feels good. If you want to make it simpler for maintaining a good looking piece of furniture get leather versus fabric as it is easier to keep clean.

Good Luck!
