Training pad misses!

Question
We have a 3 year old Lhasa/Poodle mix.  We've trained her to use an indoor pee pad and things were going relatively well until the past few months.  Lately, when peeing, she seems to always pee off the edge of the training pad.  On hardwood floors this makes the pee run under the pad and soak into the floor until we find it.  Lovely!
I tried moving the pad further out from the wall in case it was a space issue.  I've tried using two pads side by side to allow for more space.  I tried putting a shower curtain under the pee pad to catch the over-run.  The shower curtain quickly became the pee pad and she began peeing off the side of that.  I've now purchased a raised-edge pee pad holder with the hopes that it would help her aim.  Despite putting a used ("smelly") pee pad into the holder, she won't do anything but poop in it.  She's found other places in the room to pee instead.  I've run out of ideas!
Taking her outside 3-4 times a day seems to help the accidents, but there is frequently a pee puddle near the pad every morning.  I guess long term, it would be nice to convert her to peeing outside with the option of still using the pad if we are gone for an extended period.  But I've heard that is difficult once they are inside trained.  Short term, we obviously need her to stop peeing on the floor.  Can you offer any advice?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Dave!

I believe your best bet would be to go ahead and train your pup to potty outside at this point.  As your puppy grows, she will be able to hold it longer and longer.  Once she reaches 9 months or up to a year she will probably be able to hold it for those long days.  No matter what you do, while she is a puppy there will always the possibility of potty accidents simply because no matter how well "trained" she is puppies can only hold it for so long.  So, be sure to take her outside to potty regularly.

Check out this blog post for my suggestions.

Also, be sure to go to the link on "cleaning dog pee" as you will want to be sure to do this in such a way that your puppy won't return to pee in the same spots.

Good luck!
