nervous dog

Question
Hi, we have a pure breed Border Collie that we got when she was about 6 months old. She is now about 10 months. We've always had a dog and never had a problem but not this time. The dog if very focussed on her ball and when that is occuring everything is pretty good. But, the dog is not becoming attached to anybody. She is very nervous and because of concern over the collar we've decided to put her in a chest type leash. Problem is she won't let us put it on. She will not allow us to handle her legs and in response to any gentle attempt she snaps very aggressively at us. She is terrified of other dogs, traffic and many things. Loud noises will throw her off and in general, except for a ball, she is very unpredictable. We have been very gentle and encouraging with this dog but it is getting to the point where I know that it is not a matter of 'if' she bits someone but when. And, the first bite will likely be to her master, a sweet young woman of 19 years who does everything possible for this dog.

Answer
As always, have the dog examined by a veterinarian to be certain there are no health concerns. If you get a clean bill of health, then training can move forward. Here's a link to some information about "normal" for dogs: http://outlawchinooks.com/Dog_Information.html

First we should look at the type of dog, a Border Collie. These are dogs that really thrive on having a purpose, or a job, if you will. Without anything to do they often make up things or add undesirable behaviors to their repertoire.

I would immediately get help with the collar concerns. All dogs should know how to wear a collar and teaching them how to acclimate to one is usually a fairly simple process.

I would also suggest that you do some searching for a trainer that understands Border Collies and herding breeds and can help you get your dog moving forward in a positive manner to become a productive part of society.

Here are some links for more information: http://www.akc.org/ and http://www.ukcdogs.com/ you can type in Border Collie on either page and that will take you to additional information.

Good Luck.
