Advanced Traning for a Mastiff

Question
We have an adopted Italian Mastiff.  When she first came to us she had some behavioral challenges which were quickly overcome. She has thus far surpassed our expectations.  We are looking to advance her training to some sort of job or sport purely for the betterment of her confidence and our shared enjoyment.  We have little opportunity for serious competitions as there is nothing in our area.

I am not really sure where to start.  In searches for this breed protection training is very common but not really what we seek.  She is first and foremost a family dog.  I have been  investigating weight pulling and do have the proper equipment for this sport however I am not sure if it suits her breed or not?

My first and foremost purpose for advancing her training is for her enrichment as well as strengthening our existing bond and trust.

Could you make any suggestions?  As well as good books or websites to read?

Thank you!

She is a cane corso (Italian Mastiff), just about a year old.  Very calm, obedient and loyal.  Eager to please, but has suffered some previous instability and abuse (much recovered not but occasional relapse does occur)

Thank you for taking the time to answer me!

Answer
I think weight pulling would be an excellent way to work with your dog and develop a great bond.  The August 2010 issue of the Whole Dog Journal  - http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/ - has an article dedicated to the sport.  You might be able to purchase a back issue.  Many different breeds participate and as long as your dog is healthy, there's no reason not to give it a try!

You can earn various titles on the dog or just do it for fun.
