two Jack Russels fight a feed time

Question
HI We have a jack Russell called Poppy, she if 15 months old and has been spayed.  She is a very pleasant dog who loves children and loves to meet other dogs on her walks.  In June this year my parents went into an apartment, and we adopted their jack Russell Tess, who is 10 years old and not spayed.  At first they were very shy with each other, and Tess would not play with poppy, but we introduced them slowly and they began to sleep together and eat together, about 6 weeks ago, the trouble started, every time we gave them their dinner, the little one would start to growl, and her hair on her back would stand on end, she was snarling and then they started to fight, we started to feed them separately, but she is still trying to get to the other dog, we have a plastic bottle with dried rice and stones that we shake to stop the dog attacking the other one, we are at are wits end, what should we do next?

Answer
Hi Beverly,  I'm not sure I completely understand.  I understand they fight at meal time, but has the fighting escalated to other times as well (even when no food is present).

I live in a house with multiple dogs and I always feed them separately as fights will most likely always happen.  As you can tell, the dogs get very protective over their food.   I would either feed them both in a separate crate and let them relax in there for a few minutes after all food is gone.  Then let them out of the crate and pick the food bowls up.   Either that or feed them in totally separate rooms so they can't see each other.   When a dog is protective over his/her food from another animal -- it is best to just feed them seperately because there really isn't a "fix" for that.

If they are fighting at other times as well now, please let me know.
