Training a new puppy to be good with children

Question
We have a mixed breed lab & a mixed breed huskey, both 8 yrs old & a new 6 week siberian huskey. The two older dogs are not used to small children and don't like to be bothered by them. I think we should take our new puppy to a family member's home that we visit frequently so that the puppy will get used to children. The family  has 4 children from 1 month old to 13. We are planning to have children in the next two years. I think the new puppy should learn to be good around children now before we have our own. My husband feels the other dogs will be upset if we always leave them behind when we go to visit this family. The older dogs do no go to that house now as my husband is concerned that the young children (3 & 5) will not maintain a distance with the dogs. This family has a 3 yr old boxer who is very playful and allows the kids to play with him all the time. What do you think? Thank you!

Answer
I don't think your idea is a bad one, Laura, providing your friends don't mind. I think it's a good idea to not take the older dogs, since they aren't impressed by children anyway. However, your dogs might just surprise you when you have children of your own. Children from a different "pack" are entirely different than children that are part of the home "pack." Does that make sense? As long as your dogs all view your husband and you as the alphas, there shouldn't be a problem at all, since only the alphas breed in a wild dog pack. I don't think your older dogs will mind that you take the puppy with you when you go to visit the family with kids. Tell your husband that he is anthropomorphizing the dogs; I assure you they will not be upset. ;^)
