Yorkies nipples have milk but not pregnant?

Question
I own 3 Yorkies. Suzy, Chase, Haley. Suzy and Chase mated to create Haley. Haley was born 2/06. She went into heat this past february. Accidentally Chase (her father) got ahold of her while she was in heat. Well she would have been due April 6, 2007. She never got bigger or anything! Her mother, Suzy has had 2 litters so I kindof knew what to look for and such with the dogs pregnancies. Well, she never got any bigger or showed any signs of going into labor or anything. SO I thought that since I had caught her (Haley) mating with her dad right when they first started that she had not gotten pregnant afterall. Well, I just went out of town for 4 days and have just gotten back. I picked her up and noticed that her nipples kinda look pointy, and different. She has been digging around in her bed/kennel, but I cant decide if she has been doing it more now that I have gotten back from out of town or have been digging the same. I squeezed her nipples a minute ago and could get a little bit of milk, or white stuff. My question is, could she be pregnant? Or is it normal for them to "dig" around in their bed? She is very active and runs around the same as usual. She hasnt acted sick or slowly or anything. What do you think?

Answer
Hi Tiffany,
She could be experiencing a false pregnancy.
She can very well produce milk and will often adopt a toy as her "baby".  If she would have been due on April 6th, then she is obviously not pregnant. (that is, if you counted 63 days from the breeding date).  You can take her to the Vet for a shot to dry up her milk.  If she continues to produce milk, that may be a good idea.  Usually this goes away and you may not have to do that.  I think the digging in her bed is to make a "nest" for her babies that she thinks she's going to have.  I have a friend that had a dog that adopted their hamster as her baby! She will probably do that soon, adopt something as her baby. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but do watch her nipples. If she continues to produce milk it could cause problems such as mastitis.  You will want to take her to the Vet before that happens!

God Bless,
Becky
