Licking paws

Question
Hello, my chihuahua has this habit of licking her paws constantly - she soaks the bed all the time and gets mad at me if I try to stop her from doing it. She picks up her paw (I think by the fur in between the nails) and I can hear her drop the paw on the bed and then continues to lick. Not just one paw but both front paws. Is this just a habit? Her pads seem a bit dry as well, is there anything I can put on them that is safe for her, especially as she's so intent about licking.

Thanks for your consideration.

Lynda

Answer
Hi Lynda'
This is one of two things, Either an OCD type behavior, like biting your fingernails, that has gotten way out of control, or an allergy that is causing serious itching. What's in her food? Wheat, corn, soy, by products of any kind, are serious allergens that can cause itching of feet and ears etc.
Also do you walk her on salted sidewalks? If so be sure you wash her feet well when she comes back in. You should also pay attention to any kind of carpet powder or cleaner you use, she could be allergic. Baking soda works well and isn't likely to cause allergies,
Meanwhile, get her some doggie boots. She'll hate them, but they'll stop her. Also try a wax or soothing cream for dogs. The two best products are Soothables TenderFoot Pad Creme and Musher's Secret. Musher's is more of a wax and TenderFoot is more or a lotion. THe dryness is probably from her licking so much. Use the cream and put it on under the boots. Use the wax when she isn't wearing the boots to keep the moisture in if she does lick. You can also try some behavior modification. A loud clap of your hands when she is licking often helps. Give her a doggie toy stuffed with food treats to help keep her tongue and teeth occupied. Hope this helps
Good luck
