Question
My 5 year old Kerry Blue Terrier has been diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma and was undergoing chemotherapy.  This went quite well for a while and now he is lethargic and has little or no appetite.  We stopped the chemo and put him back on prednisone for his appetite and an unrelated soft tissue injury, but his appetite is still not back.  He was willing to eat scrambled eggs for a while and will still eat cooked chicken or turkey in small amounts, but will only occasionally eat dog food.  When he does, he seems to only eat small amounts and then will not want that kind any more.  I am not sure if he is training me to give him only people food, or if his appetite is so bad that only food that has real appeal is worth eating.  Since he has lost so much weight, I am reluctant to withhold food to wait for him to eat his dog food.  Is there some natural thing that will increase his appetite.  I have not gotten any new advice from his vet.  Thank you for your help.

Answer
I am so sorry to hear about your kerry blue.

Chemo really messes with their stomach and intestines, and makes their appetite so reduced they only want to eat the best foods. To be perfectly honest, scrambled eggs, boiled chicken/turkey, rice, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, etc is perfectly exceptable diet, and I would let him eat as much as possible until WAY after he is done his chemo. He needs his strength. Ground hamburger is great as well!

I would also smear a little bit of dark caro syrup on his gums 5-10 minutes before offering food. The sugar burst will make him hungry :)

I hope he feels better soon!
