Are berries safe for dogs?

Question
Hello,

I have a 1 year old Golden Retriever. I give Wholistic Canine Complete Joint Mobility to make sure that he gets all the vitamins/minerals, antioxidants, etc, he needs. I have heard that Cranberries, Blueberries, are great antioxidant fruits that can prevent cancer. I know Golden Retrievers are prone to caners so it is safe to give blueberries or cranberries to dogs?

Thanks,
Ray

Answer
Cranberries and Blueberries should be ok for dogs. If it were my dog though, I would buy organic fruits and organic everything. This spares you the pesticide poison that your dog WILL ingest no matter how much you wash the fruits or veggies. Blueberries, are the top 5 foods containing antioxcidents which are the bodies cancer fighting agents . Recent studies have shown (according to last months Readers Digest) and other news sources, that eating a handfull of blueberries before test increased scores up to 20%! Hey they must make people smarter too! LOL Actually the blueberry causes natural alertness in people and prevents cancers. Cranberry juice is what is used to prevent urinary tract infections in people.

Cranberries are very high in vitamin C and the Vit C IN THE FRUIT IS NATURAL. Most people do not realize that ascorbic acid IS NOT VIT C yet they buy the vits and pills in the store and think they are helping their dogs...no way. But Vit C FROM THE ORGANIC fruit itself, is a good thing.

Blueberries are added to Solid Gold Dog Food and so are cranberries in some other holistic type dog foods. I also give carrots daily to munch on instead to my dogs. They think they are the best treat in the world! For a dog that isn't used to them I'd suggest placing place them in a magic bullet, skin and all if they are organic, and feed them tiny bits of the 'sauce' as a treat. Do not add the fruits to their food but give alone.

Hope this helped. Sue
