Question
I have a 13 year old cocker spaniel.  I am trying to find recipes to make for her.  I understand there has to be a moderate protein, low phosphorus, magnesium and sodium.  I need to know what foods to feed her and how to balance all this.  I give her Canine Plus by vetri-science and 600 mg of calcium carbonate.  Any help I would be grateful for.  Thank You Valerie

Answer
Hi Valerie - Sure - I would love to help you and will try but I am not a vet nor am I in the  medical field. I asked my mentor for some help FOR YOU and below are a couple of recipes you might find helpful--I sure hope so. So,here are the recipes and a supplement:  Works very well with many of my mentor's clients and so I pass it along to you without REALLY KNOWING your pooch.
Most vets will Not support you on home cooking / they don't make any money on it!

By the way, for dogs with struvite stones---If the UTI is under control the struvite crystals MAY be under control, too.

Also you might want to consider an even lower level of protein in your pals' diet. From the sounds of your letter, he is doing ok and you just want some variety. So here goes.

Try This Fish Recipes for Low-Protein Dog Food Ideas

One of the simplest recipes for low-protein dog food feasts includes
Tuna Cake - perfect for those dogs that are afflicted with a kidney
disease.
This might not offer an appetizing aroma, but our dogs will be
delighted with treats like these, which often take less than ten
minutes to organize.
Begin by mashing up two cans of tuna in a large bowl; add in three
cups of flour and 2 eggs.
Take equal portions of the mixture and mould into small cakes. Now
bake at a low temperature.
It's that simply and your dog will be drooling over it for days to
come.
Various other recipes for low-protein dog food similar to this can be
prepared using other varieties of fish.

Anyway - thought some of you may want to make it : I am sure you can
use wheat flour rather than white...
BUT BEAR IN MIND THAT THIS IS NOT A WHEAT FREE RECIPE...OK???

I hope I helped. Susan
