Question
my yorkie and another tied 6 weeks ago ive noticed her sides getting bigger near her ribs and her belly is hard but not fat   i dont really know if shes pregant my friend said she should be showing by now

Answer
Lizz,

The gestation period is nine weeks.  So by human standards she is six months pregnant.  If she tied and became pregnant then she may not be showing yet if she only has one puppy.  The tell tale signs you should be looking for are, her pee pee should still be swollen and will continue to swell until she has her puppies.  About two weeks before she is due her nipples will swell and start to fill with milk.  The last two weeks is when they put on the weight.

You can take her to the vet and he can tell if she is pregnant just by feeling her stomach.  I would suggest that you take her to the vet because there are a lot of things that you will need to do in preparation for the birth.  Did she tie with a male that was smaller than her?  If not you will also need to prepare for the inevitable complications that will arise from breeding a small female to a larger male.

Being well prepared can make the difference between having a successful birth and loosing the puppies, mother or both.  I provide a free word document on my website that will give you the basic knowledge that you will need to prepare for the birth.  The document is located at www.petremembrances.com/Yorkie%20Advise.com  You can cut and paste the address into your browser and it will take you directly to the page where the document is located.

Even if your female is not pregnant you should download the document.  If you plan on breeding you will need to educate yourself with the do's and don'ts of breeding and the how to's in order to be successful and guarantee that you have good outcomes.
