Pet insurance

Question
QUESTION: We have two Yorkshire Terrorists, a female 4 and a male 8 months. We just took in a stray that appears to have a Peke body and a cocker face. (I have created a new breed for him: North American Bourgeois. Can you help me get this registered? Ha!)
The newbie has had his first round of shots and is scheduled on this Fri. to be fixed and have the rest of his shots. The new charges will be about $400.00. I am looking into pet insurance to cover the costs. I have brochures about the ASPCA policy as well as the VCA coverage described at petinsurance.com/VCA.
Any thoughts on these or any others?

ANSWER: Charles,

I have thought of getting pet insurance but when I figured the prices I decided that it was to much of a gamble.  My pet would have to be sick a lot to make it worth while.  So I guess rather than pay for the insurance I figured I's take my chances.

Sincerely,

Melinda

QUESTION: I agree. However, I am doing the math to see if it makes sense to take out the insurance and get the $400.00 bunch of stuff done and then cancel. If so, and if they have one of those "you can cancel at any time" clauses, I feel OK about it. Any thoughts?

Answer
Charles,

I will be surprised if you can find such a policy.  I would say that the more likely thing is going to be like regular insurance companies.  What I mean by that is that pre-existing conditions are not covered and that you must have the insurance for a period of time in order to get benefits.  I am also not sure if well visits would be covered.  But hey, you never know.  If you find such a thing let me know the details so I can pass it on to the readers of this forum.

Thanks,

Melinda
