Question
HELP!! I am confused.  There is so much conflicting information out in cyber space as to what is the best shampoo/brush/bathing schedule for yorkies.  What is the real answer?  Also, what do you suggest using to pull their hair back?  The little bows I got at the pet store have real rubber bands on them and I dont use them on my hair or my kids because I dont want breakage...is it a good idea to use it on my yorkie baby?

Answer
Angie,

You can bathe your yorkie once a week at the most.  Because they are susceptible to skin problems it is not advisable to bathe them more than that.  I always used baby shampoo because then I didn't have to worry if it got in their eyes.  Technically you are supposed to brush their hair everyday but I had seven at one time so I didn't get that done.  The only reason to brush them is to keep them from getting mats in their hair.  Some have coarse hair and do not get mats easily so you can brush them once a week if you want to.  Others will need to be brushed daily etc. it is dependent on the individual dog.  As far as pulling their hair back as you already know from your own experience rubber bands pull the hair and hurt when you take them out.  The only thing you could use to keep the hair back that would not hurt her would be a small barrette or a scrunchy which is difficult to find in such a small size.  I never did this with mine because I felt that their personal comfort was more important than how they looked to others.  I kept their bangs cut so they could see and then there was no need for a bow or rubber bands.  The reason there is so much conflicting information on the Internet is because it really depends on the individual owner and their dog.
