Yorkie inbreed

Question
We are in the market for a new puppy. My wife likes Yorkies. A friend of a friend has a litter of pups for sale. The pups parents are mother and son. Both full Yorkies. Should I be concerned about the inbreeding and if so what? The puppies look great. There is no papers on the puppies and she is offering them for $350 each due to friendship.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks,

Answer
Will,

Be very careful.  The American Kennel Club has stringent rules regarding inbreeding.  A breeder is only allowed to breed back to a close relative (mother to son) once.  If they are bred back more than once the AKC will not issue papers or recognize the litter.

That being said you should know that the reason for this is that the more inbreeding that occurs the meaner the puppies will be.  I know this person is a friend but I would have to say the reason she does not have papers is because she knows that the AKC will not give them to her.  If you purchase these puppies and that is the case you could be getting a mean dog.  What I mean by mean is that they are anti-social, bite, and generally not a loveable dog.  I would suspect that this is not what your wife wants.  Also, you friend is probably reducing the price because she knows that she will have a hard time selling the puppies if anyone who knows anything finds out that the dogs were inbred and that they have no papers.  If it were me I would look elsewhere.  If you need some pointers on what to look for when you buy a puppy please look through my past answers on the All Experts website and you should get all the information you need to make an informed decision and to prevent you from buying a puppy that you will be unhappy with.  As with anything the motto for purchasing a puppy is "Buyer Beware".

Sincerely,

Melinda
