Question
I am interested in purchasing a yorkie puppy, however the puppy is mostly all black.  The puppy has some small tan marks on his hind quarters, and the breeder did show me some "blond" hairs on his head.  Both parents are purebred, and I have seen the mother who has the normal steel colouring on the back and tan face.  My question is will this dog mature to have the "normal" colours?

Answer
Amy,

All yorkie puppies are born with black and tan coloring.  They actually look like miniature Dobermans.  One thing I can tell you is that you will not be able to tell what color the puppy is going to be until it is about 6 months old.  Anyone who tries to tell you what color the puppy is going to be when it is grown should not be trusted.  Their hair goes through a process:

When they are born it is short and slick almost like skin
next it will begin to get a little longer and fuzzy the colors may change and they may not.
Next they will loose the fuzz and their hair will return to being short and slick, and it is at this point that their final coat of hair will grow in and the permanent color will arise.  This is not to say that the color will not change again when they get older, I had one that I shaved because her mats were so bad and the hair grew back in in a different color!

About the only thing you can do is look at the parents and if you like their coloring and you like the puppy then go ahead and get her.  Chances are that she will probably be the color of her parents or some variation of that.  Remember, there are no guarantees when it comes to their hair so all you can do is go with your instincts.

Sincerely,

Melinda
