Are female labs okay with other female dogs?

Question
We have a 3 month old Choc. Lab, named Rogue, and someday we would like to get another dog. I have been told that female Labs should not live with other female dogs.  Do you know if this is true?

Answer
It varies greatly with the individual dog.  In general female/female is the combination most likely to give problems.  Dogs seem to be born with varying drives for dominance.  In a litter, one of each sex will dominate the others of that sex.  The urge becomes stronger as the dog reaches maturity at about 3 years.  Put 2 very dominate females together, Labs or not, and you have trouble.  It is even worse if they are not spayed.  Best combination is a spayed female/neutered male.

Whatever dogs you have, it works best if you are giving them the strong leadership they need.  If you are not careful, the dog can end up running the household.  Labs are bad enough about that, but some of the small breeds are even worse.  The dogs see all the
people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in
the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members
outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by
reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class
or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with
a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/

I have friends that have 3 female Labs, a female Golden, and a male Golden in their house and never a problem.
