Question
Hi,
I have an * month old german shepherd, and we are planning on breeding her in a year or so. And I was wondering, how big is the usual size or a litter. I got her from a litter of 3. Also, my sister, Marisa, told me that usually when you cross a black lab with a yellow lab that there is a good posibility that it will be a litter of all chocolate labs puppies. I do not agree with this. I tink that if you cross these dogs, then you will get most of the color of the male and some colors of the female(mom) and there is a possibility of having a chocolate lab in that litter. Also my sister thinks that a chocolate lab is not a real breed of dog like a black lab and a yellow lab but I do not agree.!

Answer
Hello, think carefully before breeding her ...will the puppies for sure have permant loving homes? will you be able to give yuor time and mnoey to the care of the litter of puppies rmember they all need to eat puppy kibble for weeks before going homes and need there first check/vaccine/worming before they go home to. Also consider there may be problems with the mother..pregancy complications or whelping problmes can you afford to loose her? or have thousands for a c section? that might accur? After having said that don't cross breed, there are way to many shepard lab crosses just in my area alone right now needing homes ASAP! cant keep them the ads say moving must go, other ads say one or both parents are free some say older shepard cross dogs or lab X dogs free to good home got too big or are too hyper...you need to be sure the puppies go to permant homes not flusy homes that keep the dog for a few months and drop it off at the pound to be put down only a week later because the adopter want a new puppy not an older dog. Breed to a german shepard if your bitch isnt papered or registered again reconsider. I ahevnt heard this therory most lab shep crosses I see look like black labs. Tell your sister or friend that Labrador retreivers are a breed as a whole they ***Come in black, yellow, chocolate/silver and red fox. just like a toy poodle comes in black/parti colored/red/apricot, silver  & white  its just one breed with many color varriations. A black lab isnt a different breed then a chocolate as a yellow isnt a different breed then a silver there all the exact same dog but only in different colors. I fully understand wanting to breed a dog if you want another foryuorself would be the only reason I'd see fit cross breeding or breeding an unregistered dog to the same breed either way, if yu want to make money try something else, you will loose money in the feeding of the pregnant mother, the litter of puppies the vaccines/wormings/checks and the toys and such teh puppies need whiel in your care.... I wrote all this to let you know that there are already many mixed breeds in shelters needing homes that haev been abondoned because of varius crapy reasons...take a look at a locale shelter or the free ads in lcole newspapers before breeding. If shes registered papered and you cna find a amel german of the same by all means if yu cna afford it go for it but agian the most inportant thing by far is being able to place the puppies into permant loving homes. Best of luck, I'd be happy to give more information on caring for the bitch and litter when the time rolls around. Litter size shepard litters I see around here are normaly at lest 5 some tiems as many as ten.
