5 month lab puppy

Question
Hello
We are lucky enough to become the proud owners of a 5 month old Labrador. His previous owners have been feeding him on a dry puppy meal, twice a day of a total of 130g, which I have continued to do on her recommendation. However, I am absolutely horrified to discover that he may actually need between 475-890g per day. I feel absolutely awful if this is the case.My puppy is lively, fit and active and is showing no signs of being underfed. I would be extremely grateful if you could give me some advice as this is really worrying me. Many thanks for your time.

Answer
Go buy his body condition.  My guess is more like 300-400 grams.  You should be feeding all life stages food now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Often the directions on the bag are way to high.  Overly lean is much better for a growing large breed puppy that overweight.
