Question
HI, Please tell me how often and how I can tell when my black flat coated retriever is on heat. She is now 20 months old and I think has been on heat once. We would like to breed her with a golden retriever . Is that ok?

Answer
Usually when a female is in season, there is an obvious bloody discharge.  There are other signs such as a swollen vulva.  An influx of males hanging around is another good sign.  And note, if you do breed her, neither they nor the chances of them breeding her will go away after doing so.

Your questions suggest to me that you haven't even started the research you need to do before breeding any dog.  Does she and any particular male you are considering have their OFA and CEER certifications?  Why are you considering cross breeds?  There are good reasons for it, but making money on designer dogs is not one of them.  I beg you to go to www.akc.org, and read their material on breeding.
