Question
Hi I have a 2 year old German shepherd that I have owned for about 3 months. She is a really good dog but I have problems walking her, if we see a man she will jump up and bark at him. This is no good when walking her through the village. I think she has had a bad experience in the past, but I really need to stop her from doing this any ideas?

Answer
Likely you are right about the past bad experience although it could be just a lack of men in the past.  Work at having men she doesn't know give her treats.  Enroll in a obedience class.  Discuss the problem with the instructor first.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
