GSD and eating

Question
I have a 7mo old GSD (Savannah)and I also have a 2yr girl old at home (Taliya). I am having a problem with Savannah and Taliya when the dog eats. Savannah has never bit Taliya, but she has made it clear that she dosent want Taliya anywhere near when she is eating. Taliya has tired to pet Savannah when the dog was eating, but Savannah will gruff at Taliya. My husband and I are always there when Savannah eats, so we catch these incidents. However I want Taliya to be comfortable around Savannah and not be afraid of her. Every time Savannah gruffs, I say in a sharp and loud voice "NO" and Savannah stops. However Savannah still dose not like Taliya around. How do I fix this problem?

Answer
The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Dig around on that last site and they have some more material on dogs and children.
