What to Look for in a GSD

Question
Hi Labman,

I recently received a lab several weeks ago which my parents want to take home to our province as a guard dog (or just a deterrent because of his large size).  I don't want to give him up so I'm thinking of giving them a big dog.

I'm thinking of either a labrador or a GSD.  Labs here are cheaper than GSDs (shelter adoption is not an option here in the Philippines).

What are your thoughts on this?

Also, if I do decide on a GSD, what are the things I should look for in a puppy?  Majority of the GSDs I see here have one or both ears floppy (not standing erect).

Also, are there other large breed dogs that you can propose as guard dogs but are gentle and loyal to the family?  The dogs should be able to tolerate tropical heat during the summer months and preferably those with low-maintenance coat.

Thank you.

Answer
There aren't good solid answers to your questions.  When selecting a puppy, above all, look at the health of the parents and any past liters.  You want to see several generations of OFA good or better hip ratings.  Ask about food.  You don't want parents on expensive dog foods due to allergies or sensitive stomach.  Some of the best advice I know of on selecting a puppy is at http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/articles.html#breeding

I suspect the floppy ears are a genetic thing, so avoid parents with floppy ears.  Also check their temperament.

While the herding breeds tend to be suspecious of strangers, any large breed has a deterrent factor.  All dogs have an instict to protect their family.
