Question
We have a beautiful German Shepherd, Nero, aged about five. He was a rescue dog, but even the vet says he is a real aristocrat of a GSD. He has always moulted hugely, (he is the short-haired variety) but this last winter we have been up to out knees in hair! I have changed his feed to a more expensive one (Iams)and the moulting has reduced but it is still impossible to stroke him without ending up covered in hair. I have to hoover the car almost daily! Also his coat looks less shiny than it used to, although it is just as thick. Any suggestions? And could you tell me the current thinking about how often to bath him, (he swims in the sea almost daily) and what tools to use for grooming him? Thank you for your kindness.

Answer
HI ELENA MERA
DO NOT EVER BATH A GERMAN SHEPHERD.  THIS IS VERY DRYING TO THEIR SKIN AND COATS.  BRUSHING THE COAT AGAINST THE GROWTH AND USE A GERMAN RAKE ALSO AND DOG COMB.  THEN BRUSH THE HAIR DOWN WITH THE GROWTH FOR THE FINAL STEP.  U CAN ALSO PICK OUT THE CLUMPS.
GIVE THE DOG A SARDINE TWICE A WEEK PACKED IN OILS.
ALSO, GO TO MY SITE ON FRONT PAGE OR LITTER PAGE AND CLICK ON SPRINGTIME AND ORDER FRESH FACTORS.  IT IS FOR LESS SHEDDING, SHINY COAT, ETC.  ALSO, U MIGHT BE GIVING THE DOG TOO MANY CHEMICALS.?
SUCH AS SHOTS UNNECESSARY NOW, HEART GUARD MONTHLY, FLEA VIALS, CHEMICALS IN YOUR CLEANING RUB INTO HIM?
STOP PUTTING CHEMICALS INTO OUR DOGS, IT IS KILLING THEM WITH CANCERS, THYROID PROBLEMS, HEART, ETC.
EMAIL ME FOR WHAT I USE AS MY WORMER HAS THE SAME INGREDIENT AS HEART GUARD AND SAVES U MONEY.
I USE BUG OFF FROM SPRINGTIME FOR FLEAS AND TICKS AND NEVER IN MY LIFE AND I WILL BE 66 JULY, HAVE I SEEN A REAL TICK.

IT COULD ALSO BE THE SALT WATER DRYING HIM OUT AND MAKING THE COAT DULL?  RINSE HIM WITH CLEAR WATER EVERY DAY HE GETS OUT.  SO, NO BATHING WITH SHAMPOOS, ESPECIALLY SWIMMING IN THE SEA, RINSE IMMEDIATELY WHEN DONE WITH CLEAR WATER, DRY AND BRUSH.  BRUSH DAILY UNTIL U GET THIS DEAD HAIR REMOVED.  USE WHAT I DO AND U WILL NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH THE COAT AND DRY SKIN HE MUST HAVE SWIMMING AND BATHING HIM.  SHEPHERDS ARE NO MAINTENANCE DOGS. BRUSH, RAKE, COMB, CURRY COMB, BRUSH FOR PULLING OUT KNATS ETC.  IT IS ROUND WITH TINY TEETH TO PULL DEAD HAIR OUT THE COMB OR RAKE MIGHT MAKE IT SORE TOO OFTEN.  PET STORES AND FEED STORES HAVE THESE OR WWW.DRSFOSTERSMITH.COM DOES
