Question
MY COCKER SPANIEL IS 22MONTHS OLD AND FOR OVER A YEAR WE HAVE BEEN BATTLING SKIN ISSUES, HE IS A HOUSE DOG, HE WAS PURCHASED FROM ARIZONA AND WE LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA, HE IS MISERABLE, SCRATCHES CONSTANTLY, VET ONLY GIVES STEROIDS AND ANTIBIOTICS. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE COULD TRY, I SWITCHED HIS DOG FOOD FROM PRO PLAN TO NATURES RECIPE FOR HEALTHY SKIN. HIS SKIN GETS RED SPOTS THAT TURN INTO DRY PATCHES, I BRUSH HIS SKIN 2-4 TIMES A DAY TO KEEP PATCHES FROM APPEARING BUT NOTHING HAS HELPED. IS THERE A SUCH THING AS DERMATOLOGIST FOR DOGS IF SO WHERE CAN I FIND ONE?

Answer
Most vets seem to reach for the steroids because they know squat about skin conditions.
Did he do a skin scrape?

Nature's Recipe is okay...not kibble.  Use canned - switch him over slowly.  Kibble is too high in carbs for a cocker and this exacerbates skin problems.

Yes, there are Vet Dermatologists but before I did that I'd try a few things.  What flea control is he on?

What does his skin look like?  Dry?  Flaky?  Are the "red spots" raised or more like a rash?

How often are you bathing?  The first thing I'd do is bath him in a gently hypo-allergenic shampoo and then a soak in colloidal oatmeal.
You can buy this at almost any drugstore.  Aveeno makes it - comes in a box with packets of powder.  Fill tub - mix in one packet in tepid water and soak him for 15 minutes.  Do not rinse off.

Important:  Rinse him extremely well.  When you think you've rinsed enough - rinse 10 more times.

Let me know if that offers any relief.
