Question
QUESTION: Hello my 2 month puppy vomited white foam this morning. Should I be worried? I also noticed her scooting on her bottom at least three times yesterday. She just went to the vet as of last week and they say she healthy They did a stool sample and she takes her worm pill every month. She eats  nutro 2 times a days drinks pretty good too.  She walks daily and poops good. I did notice that her poops are starting to smell worst than before. Thank you in advance. My puppy has a appointment next week for her flea and worm prescription. Could I wait then or does this sound serious?

ANSWER: Yes, you can wait till you see the vet.  To prevent her from that "morning" issue, give her a snack as late at night as you can.  Sometimes they do this when their tummies are empty for too long.

Nutro isn't the best food.  Not the worst, but far from the best.  If you'd like a recommendation for something better, let me know.  And a puppy her age needs to be fed 4 to 5 times a day.  They can't handle two "big meals" a day.

What "worm pill" is she taking monthly?  That sounds excessive.

If she's scooting, ask the vet to check her anal glands.  When the anal glands get too full, they're a bit itchy and that's why she's scooting.

So I think you can relax :)  None of this is anything to get worried about.  I highly recommend a better food and to increase the number of meals..with one late at night.

QUESTION: Okay. Thank you so much you have been helpful. I can see that happening.I've feed her a bit earlier yesterday since we've had a late night at church. What foods do you recommend? Is there any way we could prevent the anal glands from getting too full? The vet put her a heart worm pill that she takes once a month. Do I have to go through the vet to get her flea prevention or could I just buy something over the counter.I know the vet recommended advantage.  I also have a potty training question. I've been reading a lot and it seems that I'm doing everything right. It does seem to get better with time. Its been about 3 weeks. How can I teach her to let us kno when she has to go out. Sometimes she waits for us to take her out and some times it seems like she doesn't care and soes it inside. She will also do it in her crate in the middle of the night. I heard that they don't like this and will often try and wait.

Answer
I highly recommend Innova EVO and Orijen.  You'll find them more expensive..but you feed less of it.  And don't stick with one protein...rotate them.  If you go to Naturapet.com you can locate a store in your area that sells Innova.  Any store that sells that will carry other premium brands like Orijen.  The reason I like these in particular is that they're grain free.

I think what you're referring to as the "worm pill" is probably Heartguard?  That's to prevent heartworm.  You can use Revolution which is one product that does both heartworm and fleas.
I like it best because it's a med, not a pesticide.  You do need a prescription but it's cheaper to order it online than to buy it from the vet.  EntirelyPets.com or 1-800 PetMeds.

Re the anal glands - it can indicate not enough fibre in her diet and/or not enough exercise.
First get the vet to check them and he'll empty them for you.  If she does have full anal glands I'd add a tsp. of PURE pumpkin to her food each meal.  NOT pie filling - 100% pumpkin that you'll find in the canned fruit section of the supermarket.  No other ingredients-just pumpkin.
Stokely's & Libby's makes it.  Read the label to make sure.

Now potty training:  TAKE her out - when you see she's about to go, give your command "go potty" (or whatever you choose).  After - lots of praise and a treat.
Always use the same words to go out... "Wanna go OUT?"

At her age she has little "control" so be patient, consistent and take her out every few hours.
You'll have to make housebreaking a priority for a month and stay on it.  But it's kind of amazing how quickly they connect the command-action-reward/praise.

If she has an accident do not scold unless you catch her right in the act.  In less than a minute she'll have no clue why you're upset with her.

And remember - routine is your friend with a puppy :)    In the morning, take her out before she eats...and after she eats..and after every nap..and before bedtime.  Always the same words "Wanna go OUT?" (in a happy voice) and watch her carefully so you can give the command as she's finding her spot to go.
Over the top praise and always a reward.

Very soon she'll hear "Wanna go OUT?" and she'll head for the door.  Within a week you'll see her look to you for her praise & reward after she goes.  Then you know you're nearly there :)

Yes, there will be those times when you've had her out for 15 minutes - she doesn't go and 10 minutes later has a tinkle in the house.  It happens.  Be cool - be patient and keep on it.
You want this done and over with!
Best of luck and do write anytime with questions.
