Question

missing hair
hello, i was just doing some search over the net and found this website, my cocker spaniel is 3yrs old, his name is "Toby" and the last 2 months he's been having problem with the skin/paws. was licking his paws a lot and now kinda stop lately, but licking more the the top of paws... and we took it to the vet and put him on "medi cal, vegetarian formula" for now, since wanna see if it's  food or pollen allergic . gave him some anti-bacteria (Novo-lexin 250mg) and nothing changed with that, then went back to the vet cause the ichting got worse and then put him on (zeniquin 200mg) and still is on that for 1 more week, but last week almost all his back/neck/on head... well everywhere is all dry skin with flakes all over, and smells, gave him a bath 4 days ago, and he still smells. and tonight my girlfriend found a spot on the side of his back that hair is missing and i can pull it with my finger also. never had ears infection so far. would it be better to shaved him the "puppy" cut? and use good shampoo or something. i'll attach picture also, for the spot i was saying. any advise what i should do? thanks a lot! wish Toby gets better

Answer
You need a new vet.

The first thing to do is have Toby's thyroid checked.  Call around to vets in your area and ask where they send their thyroid tests.
The answer should be Antech or Michigan State.  Keep calling until you get the right answer.  It's a simple blood test so no big deal for Toby and this has to be ruled out.  A good vet would have done this first.

What I'd do immediately is bath him with Nizoral shampoo (most drugstores & supermarkets have it).  Lather him up - leave on for 10 minutes and rinse, rinse, rinse.  Then rinse more.

After that, give him an oatmeal soak.  Buy Aveeno - it comes in a box with packets of pure colloidal oatmeal powder.  Fill the tub, mix in one packet in warmish water and soak him for 10 minutes.  Do not rinse off.  There are generic oatmeals..Target has one.  Just read the label for 100% pure colloidal oatmeal.

The Nizoral is a favorite of vet Dermatologists because it kills yeast, bacteria and fungus.

And yes, for the time being, it'd be best to clip him right down.
Most times you have to do daily baths & soaks to get this under control and give him comfort.

Try that and let me know.  And remember - leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes to let the medication work.  Only use warm water - not hot.
