neutering

Question
Should I neuter my cocker spaniel dog.  He's 9 months old now and I know it's best to do it early if going to do it.  I've been told that they can get fat and lazy if neutered, but also have been told that a dog may change it's nature once it discovers sex!  My dog seems to be innocent of this yet!  But won't be long before he tries to get friendly with the ladies.  I don't think I want to breed him at all and would be happy enough to neuter him provided it didn't change his activity level.  He is very hyper however and a little calming down would be no harm either.
Thanks Jane

Answer
Hi Jane,
its really a personal preference, but if you dont intend to use him as a stud dog, then my advice would be to get him neutured, you are right it can calm then down, but will also make him easier to train, as he will focus on you and not how many females he can track down, which will happen if he gets a scent of a female on heat no amount of recall will get him to come back, he wont get lazy ( I dont know of a lazy Cocker thats for sure) Not unless you have found his off button which im sure they havent got one!! and he wont get fat not unless you let him. I you are going to get him done now is probably the bet time while he is still young its a very simle op for a boy in and out in a day.
Good Luck and dont hesitate to message me again if you have other queries, take care
