Question
QUESTION: my cocker spaniel is 7yrs old, its been about a week since i noticed that she was having problem holding her poop while sleeping, her bed would be full of yellowish spots, by the time i wake up she has already liked it off, as not to get scold. so i thougth she had diahrea. but now im not so sure that its poop because she goes outside and dose solid poop. its not just on her bed anymore, wen she sits down and gets up theres a brownish/yellowish spot that looks like poop and at the same time looks like mucus. on the first day i noticed this, a week ago she vomited something white and refused to eat. but since that day her "Pack leader/Daddy" went on a trip, i thougth she did that because her "Daddy" was leaving. but now im worried what should i do??

ANSWER: This may be impacted anal glands so I'd take her to the vet and get her checked out.  If it is - that's a very easy fix.  Take a stool sample with you and even her bed towel to show the vet. At 7, she needs a full Wellness check annually so now is a good time to do that.  But she could also be leaking urine so the vet needs to take a look at her.

When she poops outside, do you notice her straining at all?  Is her stool a normal color?  Is she urinating okay and is the color pale yellow?

You mention she stopped eating - hopefully that was just that day?  Did she vomit "something white" first thing in the morning?

And, most importantly, what are you feeding her and how often?

Answer
Your girl can be headed for real trouble and needs to see the vet.

Kibble & bits is not a good food.  In fact, it's awful.  If you have a PetSmart near you, they carry a few better foods.  AvoDerm - Organix - Castor & Pollux.  Petco carries Spot's Stew by Halo.

Smaller pet food stores carry premium foods.  Merrick - Innova - Orijen.

Cut out the kibble and stick with canned - she needs the moisture.  And to make sure she's staying well hydrated, you can make some homemade chicken broth.  Not canned - it's loaded with sodium.  Even the low-sodium canned has too much for a dog.

Just boil water - pop in a skinless chicken breast or any chicken part - simmer till done - use lots of water.  Strain the broth WELL through a cloth into a container.  Give her 1/2 cup 3x daily.  You can only keep this in the fridge for 2 days - but when it's cooled, you can freeze it in baggies.
Always serve it warm - it's the smell that will get her to drink.
