Question
I have a mostly cocker mix - and I have two questions.  1st - Does a cocker's fur grow indefinitely, always needing to be trimmed, and if so, all over their body or just the feathery areas?  and 2nd.  If I trim my Kellie to about an inch in length her fur is rough and stubbly, so I'm letting her grow back out and be real soft aain.  I can't seem to find a happy medium here.

Answer
Louise,
Cocker's hair grows just like any other dogs. The hair will grow to a certain length and usually will become quite bushy. (this results in LOTS of matts...quite unpleasant for the dog!) They should be groomed every three to four months. Sometimes, depending on the dog, they will grow feathery in areas, and thicker in other areas. Depends on the kind of texture the dog's hair is. As for you second question, Kellie's hair is obviously coarser closer to the skin and then grows out softer. If you are really concerned about the coarse texture after she's first groomed, maybe try leaving her hair a little longer when she's groomed. This will mean you'll have to take her more often though. Although she may not feel as soft when she's first groomed, Kellie is loving her new "do" since she is matt free and is more comfortable without all that excess hair!

Wish you the best!
