Question
QUESTION: How do you get a puppy dog back if it gets loose from its collar or leash?I live near a pond and I need to know how to get my puppy dog back if it gets loose from its collar or leash. My puppy dog doesnt know commands like come or any other commands to come back to us only knows her name.Im afraid of my puppy dog getting close to the pond when she is running off the collar or leash by herself.I have an older dog that is 12 years old and my puppy dog loves the dog and we thought if somebody went into the house the puppy dog might come back to us or if somebody went in for the puppy dogs food it might come back what do you think?I just need ideas on how to get the puppy dog back if she is running loose off her collar or leash. Thanks!

ANSWER: I'm guessing this is a very young puppy?  If so, she should never, ever be off leash unless in a safe, fenced in area.

I'd suggest getting a harness for her instead of a collar (easier on her neck) and get an extension leash so she can walk with you and have a lot of freedom but still be safe and under your control.

Please never let her run loose and especially with no supervision as I'm suspecting that's what's going on.

You can begin teaching her to "come" when called by having her on a long leash - say her name, then "Come" and gently pull her towards you.  When she arrives - praise & a treat.

If I can be of any further help, please do write.

QUESTION: She is a 1 year old Cocker Spaniel her name is Buffy. We have another Cocker Spaniel She is 12 years old and blind due to glaucoma in both of her eyes she had to have her eyes removed but shes doing good she knows her way around the house and knows where her food and water dish are in the house but she isnt Buffys mom but Buffy does love her and Honey loves Buffy. We dont let our puppy or our dog run free because we dont have a fenced in yard. What happened was Buffy tends to pull back and forth with her collar and the leash and the leash clip let go of her collar and Buffy got running free which we didnt like do to us living near a pond and living close to the roadway. We want to make sure this doesnt happen again because we dont like her running free close to the road and close to the pond.We just need to know the best ways to get Buffy back if Buffy gets running free and get to know good products to use to keep her safe with us.I sleep with Buffy every night she sleeps in a cage close to my daybed and Honey sleeps in my moms room but not in a cage.Buffy tends to want to climb on Honey and she tends to run around in the house if we dont have her caged. If you have any suggestions on what we need to do please let me know thanks! Also if you have anymore ideas on how to get Buffy back if she ever gets running around loose again outside without a collar or leash let me know your suggestions thanks!

Answer
Rather than figure out how to get her back - make sure it cannot happen.  I don't know how she's slipping her collar & leash unless it's not on correctly.  Or it's broken.

but..as I told you...teach her to come when called.  This is called "training" and she needs to have a lesson every day until she gets it.

There are no "products" that will help.  Get a proper, good leash & collar or harness and begin training her.  Her safety is your responsibility and that means ensuring it's impossible for her to get loose.
