Question
Hello Delores,
I recently got a 1 year old Cocker Spaniel which the owner said was potty trained but she did have an excited pee problem with new people, and she does.  I've had her about 2 weeks but the bigger issue is that when I put her outside on the leash she will not go pee.  She sits in one spot, sometimes for as long as 1 hour.  I bring her inside, she pees, excited or otherwise.  I have tried taking her outside on the way to the leash, she excited pees but still won't pee on the leash, and then still pees in the house.  I have started putting her on the leash in the morning, leaving her there until I go to work and then putting her directly in the kennel thinking that she will have to hold it all day and will pee when returned to the leash.  It isn't working.  She sits and waits to come back inside.  I've also tried standing out there with her and having my other dog out there with her.  That isn't working either.  Please help.
Thank you,
Christine

Answer
You need to walk her, Christine.  And pick a word as a command "go potty" or whatever you like.

The trick is to anticipate - watch her "find her spot" then BEFORE she actually starts to go - command.  Then reward and praise. She'll soon connect the command/reward and peeing.

Putting her out or just standing there won't work.  She doesn't get it because you're not "teaching".

Make time in the morning and get her out for half an hour's walk.
Trust me - she'll go!  And you "command-praise-reward" !
Do the same routine in the evening.

Also - having a one year old in a kennel all day is really bad. She's not getting enough exercise.  Doggy daycare would be great or a dog walker mid-day.

As far as the nervous piddling - say nothing and just clean it up.
They outgrow it and correcting/scolding will just make it worse.
