Question
I just adopted 3.5yr. cocker spaniel this week & I have a couple of questions.  How often do I clean his ears?  How often do I brush/comb him & with what type of brush? He has dry skin too, what is the best thing to do about that?

Answer
Congratulations and remember it takes a few weeks for them to adjust and feel settled.

I'd start off cleaning his ears weekly just to see if he needs that.
If all is well, then every 2nd week, etc. to find out what his maintenance requires.

Every cocker is different.  I have one whose ears need cleaning nearly weekly and one who's fine once a month.  A lot can depend on the size of their ear canals.

I highly recommend the Zymox products for ears.  If you read the post I wrote just before yours, it'll explain that.  If you can't find it, I'll be happy to explain it.

You brush him every day.  Buy what's called a slicker brush and brush his fur in both directions.  Then use the comb.

The dry skin?  I'd want to know what you're feeding and if you're seeing any "flakiness"?  Is he scratching?  How is his coat?

Good nutrition is key.
Hope that's helpful Abbie and don't hesitate to write with any other questions.
