chi diarrhea with mucous

Question
My chi has had diarrhea for about a week and has alot of mucous in it now. He is constantly cleaning his butt. Behavoir is normal, other than once he has used a puppy chuck (pad) he doesn't want to use it any more. Causing problems with my carpets. Do I need to take him to a vet? Is this something serious or just something that happens with all chi's at some point? He is 4 yrs. old and still eats puppy chow. He throws up anything else I try to feed him. At breakfast he eats 10 cheerios with 2 tablespoons of skim milk, his favorite. The vet said it would be fine for him. He doesn't eat any other human food unless it's something that has been dropped and he beats us to it. He did not come from a kennel. What do I need to do? I know he has to be misserable...I've never seen a dog clean himself so much before. Help!

Answer
Hi - it could be an anal sac problem.  Give him some canned pure pumpkin - about 1 teaspoon per day. If not better in a few days, call the vet.
Also, start him on the NuVET supplement - just 1/2 teaspoon per day of NuVET Plus - mixed into some cottage cheese or Wet dog food.
here is the ordering link to NuVET

I hope this helps!
