Question
Hi!  I purchased a boxer puppy last week.  This is our first boxer.  I picked her up from the breeder on Sunday and took her to our vet on Monday, to make sure she was healthy.  My vet said she seemed very healthy and well taken care of.  She is very playful and friendly, and has been wonderful.  I have noticed though, that her 1 front leg is larger than the other front leg. Specifically in the elbow joint.  She runs and plays fine and it does not seem to cause her any issues.  She also loves to run "laps" around our yard and ends them by doing rolling
"somersaults".  I would like to know if you think this is normal??  I've just been wondering about it and she does not go back to the vet for 2 1/2 weeks.

Thanks!

Answer
A slight size difference might be within normal parameters, but a significant difference would not be.  Hard to say without seeing the actual joint, of course.  It may be a growth-related issue; excess calcium or an imbalance between calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D are common culprits.  If you're supplementing with calcium and feeding a kibble, stop the calcium; you might also consider putting her on an all-life-stages diet or even adult food rather than puppy food (if she's on puppy food now, of course).  If she shows any signs of lameness, if the elbow is extremely enlarged, if her front legs become bowed, or if any other joints start swelling, a vet visit is in order.  If it's a slight enlargement and she doesn't develop other symptoms, I'd still mention it at her next vet appointment so they can take a look.
