Small boxer

Question
Our one year old male fawn boxer only weighs a little over 40 lbs.  This seems very small.  He eats well, is active, great temperament; I had just expected a much larger dog when we got him as a puppy. Is this normal? Our vet did not seem too concerned. Thanks.

Answer
I can not believe a one year old male Boxer weighing 40 pounds is not a concern for your vet.

He is still growing, however, he should be an average of 55-60 pounds by now, and growing into 70-80 pounds average, full grown.

Does his rib cage show?

Even if he eats well, and is energetic, that low body weight is not average.

I would like to ask if his ribs show, maybe excess shedding for the average dog (year round and daily) and thirstier than an average dog, or other unusual signs.

He could have a thyroid disorder and mediation daily will put his weight on and stabilize his metabolism.

Ask your vet to test him, it's a simply blood test.

Or, get another vet.
