Question
Hi I have a 9 month old male boxer and a lot of people are telling me he's very small for his age. I measured his height today and he's just under 60 cm floor to his back. Does this sound about right and am I measuring right as I've seen your posts on the average height.

Answer
There is not an average weight for a growing puppy. And 9 months old is still a growing puppy.

It depends on his size and structure.  Boxers spend about 12 months growing tall and 12-18 additional months growing and gaining muscle mass.

A mature male should weigh between 65 and 85 lbs.  Physical maturity is reached at approx. 3 years of age.

Your concern, rather than an average weight, should be if he is in correct proportion for his bone structure.  Your vet can give you this information.  A growing dog that is too thin or too heavy risks damage to bones and joints.

Height can range from smaller structured, medium structured, and the large structure, depending on his genetics; what his mom and dad were and even grandparents.

He should measure 23-25 inches from the whithers. That is about average. His weight varies, but he should not have ribs showing, or his hip bones should not show or protrude, He should be filling out some nice muscle at this age.

If you have concerns about his weight, feed him a high protein puppy food (no corn and no glutens) and add plain yogurt (no flavors) twice a day.

Talk to your vet-- low weight can be an indication of thyroid problems or diabetes and closer to the one year old mark, these things show up.

But I think that these are good guidelines.
