Question
Rocky's about 3yrs old. In perfect health. Today he suddenly started drooling. It won't seem to stop! Never did it before. Any ideas?

Answer
Hello Richard,
If Rocky is in perfect health, then it shouldn't be his food. Usually the only reason a beagle should drool is at a young age when it is loosing its baby teeth, obviously this isn't the case. There are three things it could be. One, a foreign object in Rocky's mouth (food stuck,splinter,toy,etc.). Search his mouth and make sure there is nothing noticeable. If there was a splinter was in his mouth it would be red and warm if you touched it. Number two, it could possibly be poor dental technique, if you don't already I recommend highly that you ask your veterinarian for the proper tooth brush and medicine for Rocky, the reason you need to consult a veterinarian is they would know his history of dental problems, weight can even influence it, and age on what kind of medicine to apply to Rocky's mouth. Number three could be physical/mental problems (fatigue, anxiety) His body is changing as he gets older and when you walk and exercise him it tires him out earlier, so drool comes into play. Anxiety could come from leaving Rocky alone or not socializing him  well. Other small minor things that could be out of your hands are a hot climate since spring is approaching. I would also look into a possible fever a dog's temperature should be about 100.1-100.5. So, look into those things and if you need my help more don't hesitate to ask. Drooling is never really serious so it may be a phase. Good luck and I hope for the best!
