My cat messes on my bed

Question
My cat sometimes pees on my bed. Apart from not letting her in the bedroom, is there any good ways to deal with this? Also, any tips on cleaning the mattress afterwards?!

Answer
Mimi,

Usually a cat pees on a bed for two reasons. One they are upset at you for something and the second is that they possibly have urinary crystals or a urinary tract infection from too much magnesium and ash. That is usually caused from too much fish products and 'bargain brand' cat food.

Cleaning pee:

Blot:  Use an old, thick, bath towel and blot up as much liquid as you can with it. Continue with paper towels until no moisture is seen.
Dilute and Blot Again:  Heavily spray the area with clear water or a mild solution of white vinegar and water, then blot again, as above.
You need to clean it while it is 'fresh'. Urine goes through a decaying process as it ages, and at the same time converting it to gases, primarily that strong ammonia smell.
Never use bleaches or disinfectants. They smell like urine to a cat, so does anything pine, rose or lemon scented.

Think back on anything you did or changed around the house that may have upset the cat. Any new cats? New people in the home?

When a cat has crystals it is very painful and they associate that pain with the litterbox and go pee other places. You may want to take her to the vet and have her checked out.
