Cat peeing in basement

Question
We've moved into a new house with a finished basement. It appears that one of our cats has decided the entire basement is his litter box. How do we break him of this habit?

One of the draws to the house was having a basement for a kids area, but that won't work if he keeps peeing an pooping down there.

We know it is him because we went out of town for a weekend. He was left inside and the other cat was outside. The litter box was clean when we got home, but the basement carpet wasn't. YUCK!!

Any ideas? We've had him for about 4 years and I'd hate to get rid of him.

I saw an older question on here that talked about the older cat having kidney problems and that the male was marking her leak spots.  Our older cat is 13 and has always been very skinny.  I'm wondering now if this is what is going on.

The male is pooping down there too though, not just peeing.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hey !

Keep him out of the basement, every time you see him about to use the bathroom pick him up and carry him to the litter box. Also carry a spray bottle filled with water and everytime your too late and you catch him using the bathroom spray him with the water. Keep him out of the basement so that he learns that the basement isn't his place to use the bathroom.

I'm un-sure about your other male, there's a huge possibility that it could be his kidneys, I suggest you have him checked out by a vet.

I hope I've helped.
